In the 1960s, Beauty World—which opened in 1947—became a well-liked marketplace and retail attraction in Singapore. The name “Beauty World” was a reference to its prior existence as an amusement park; at the time, a number of entertainment parks were named different “worlds” such as Happy World, New World and Great World. Situated at the intersection of Jalan Jurong Kechil and Upper Bukit Timah Road, the Beauty World Market had more than a hundred stalls offering a wide range of everyday essentials, including fresh vegetables, household goods, textiles, and stationery. In addition, Beauty World hosted celebrations for the Hungry Ghost Festival and getai performances. The Beauty World Town was added to the market in 1962, resulting in its expansion. Following multiple fire incidents, the structure was designated for reconstruction. Later, the majority of the stallholders moved to the newly constructed Beauty World Center, which was erected across from the original location.
Today, Beauty World is a bustling hub of commercial and retail activities. The Beauty World Market is well known for its hawker fare like Satay Bee Hoon, Fried Carrot Cake and Traditional Coffee. The row of eateries along Chun Tin Road is a popular hangout for hungry late night supper goers. The area is also famous for its Korean cuisine, boasting many Korean restaurants by actual Korean families serving authentic Korean food.
Bukit Timah Shopping Centre is a popular mall to go to if one is looking for a domestic helper. With many employment centres in the building, it is easy to find a helper to assist in the daily chores, looking after the children, or even taking care of the elderly at home. It has also many enrichment centres for all educational levels within, with a few cafes and eateries hidden in the corners of the mall. A popular restaurant, Buddy Hoagies Cafe & Grill, serve good western cuisine at affordable prices.
Beauty World Centre has a supermarket, an open air hawker centre and a childcare centre within its premises. It has a myriad of retail shops, clinics, cafes, and fitness centres. Although small, brands like McDonald’s has been supporting the neighbourhood from this mall over the decades.
Bukit Timah Plaza is the modern looking shopping centre among the 3, and one can find established brands like Subway, Fairprice Supermarket, DBS Treasures and Maybank. It is also known for its Nonya cuisine and Korean eateries.
